Definitely in the Running for an Ass award – The Liberty Counsel

While there are just so many choices to pick from in the contest right now, clearly the Liberty Counsel is in the running.

For those of you who don’t know, the Liberty Counsel is the right wing “non profit public interest…” gag, gag (pardon me, that one made me throw up in my mouth a little bit) “law firm” that’s been representing Rowan County, Kentucky County Clerk Kim Davis in her fight to combine church and the county clerk’s office and not issue marriage licenses to “the gays” despite the Supreme Court of the United States (in a roundabout way), the Governor of Kentucky, and a federal judge telling her to do so. They have not only lost every step of the way but as of today their client has been jailed for contempt of court, hopefully not based on any assertions these lawyers made to her.

While this alone would be sufficient to get them in the running for the Ass of the Week/Month/Year, they get extra street cred due to their being labeled a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

And the chuckles just keep on coming. In reading a little more about them you will quickly find out they are all about people combining and exercising religious freedom while a part of the government, except when it disagrees with their beliefs.

This is the same bunch of twats who, back in 2000, managed to get the Jacksonville, Florida, public library to stop handing out certificates to Harry Potter readers for completing “Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.” The President of the Liberty Counsel at that time was Mathew Staver who babbled something along the lines of, “witchcraft is a religion, and the certificate of witchcraft endorsed a particular religion in violation of the First Amendment establishment clause.”

So, if anything puts them over the top, it will be this unbridled hypocrisy since they essentially support mingling church and state so long as it is their church.

But hypocrisy is exactly what you would expect isn’t it?
